Primed Linen
We sell a wide variety of quality linens are machine and hand primed using traditional raw materials.
Our Belgian linens are machine primed, giving the canvas an even and consistent coating along with a reduced cost. Oil primed linen is a warm white and is not absorbent, thus only suitable for oil paint. Acrylic primed canvases is 50% absorbent and has a bright white colour. It is suitable for both acrylic and oil paints. The linens have very different handling properties when using oil paints.
French hand primed linens are made in the south of France using the same materials as the Belgian linens. The linen is stretched over large 10m frames and primed in the traditional method by hand using long 'sword' spatulas. This leaves a slightly thicker application than machine priming and gives the linen a characteristic weave distortion at the sides from where it has been stretched over the frame.
